Gentry was the representative for Tennessee’s 7th congressional district and was a Whig. He served from 1851 to 1853.

He was previously the representative for Tennessee’s 7th congressional district as a Whig from 1849 to 1851; the representative for Tennessee’s 7th congressional district as a Whig from 1847 to 1849; the representative for Tennessee’s 7th congressional district as a Whig from 1845 to 1847; and the representative for Tennessee’s 8th congressional district as a Whig from 1839 to 1843.
