Tydings was a senator from Maryland and was a Democrat. He served from 1927 to 1950.

He was previously the representative for Maryland’s 2nd congressional district as a Democrat from 1925 to 1927; and the representative for Maryland’s 2nd congressional district as a Democrat from 1923 to 1925.
