Brenton was the representative for Indiana’s 10th congressional district and was a Republican. He served from 1857 to 1859.

He was previously the representative for Indiana’s 10th congressional district as an Ind. Republican-Democrat from 1855 to 1857; and the representative for Indiana’s 10th congressional district as a Whig from 1851 to 1853.
