He was previously a senator from Maryland (1822-1827); the representative for Maryland's 5th congressional district (1819-1821; Republican); the representative for Maryland's 5th congressional district (1817-1819; Republican); the representative for Maryland's 5th congressional district (1815-1817; Republican); a senator from Maryland (1803-1815; Republican); the representative for Maryland's 5th congressional district (1801-1803; Republican); the representative for Maryland's 5th congressional district (1799-1801; Republican); the representative for Maryland's 5th congressional district (1795-1799; Republican); and the representative for Maryland's 5th congressional district (1793-1795; Democratic Republican).
