He was previously a senator from Vermont (1857-1863); a senator from Vermont (1851-1857; Ind. Republican-Democrat); the representative for Vermont's 1st congressional district (1845-1847; Whig); and the representative for Vermont's 1st congressional district (1843-1845; Whig).
