Rep. William Ashley

Former Representative for Missouri

Ashley was the representative for Missouri and was a Jacksonian. He served from 1835 to 1837.

He was previously the representative for Missouri as a Jacksonian from 1833 to 1835; and the representative for Missouri’s 1st congressional district as a Jacksonian from 1831 to 1833.

Legislators who enslaved Black people

Ashley was among more than 1,800 legislators who enslaved Black people. The Washington Post compiled the first database of slaveholding members of Congress by examining thousands of pages of census records and historical documents. Ashley was one of them.

Voting Record

Missed Votes

From Dec 1831 to Mar 1837, Ashley missed 397 of 1,248 roll call votes, which is 31.8%. This is worse than the median of 21.0% among the lifetime records of representatives serving in Mar 1837. The chart below reports missed votes over time.

We don’t track why legislators miss votes, but it’s often due to medical absenses, major life events, and running for higher office.
