Bankhead was the representative for Alabama’s 7th congressional district and was a Democrat. He served from 1933 to 1940.

He was previously the representative for Alabama’s 10th congressional district as a Democrat from 1931 to 1933; the representative for Alabama’s 10th congressional district as a Democrat from 1927 to 1931; the representative for Alabama’s 10th congressional district as a Democrat from 1925 to 1927; the representative for Alabama’s 10th congressional district as a Democrat from 1923 to 1925; and the representative for Alabama’s 10th congressional district as a Democrat from 1917 to 1923.
