He was previously a senator from Minnesota (1872-1881); a senator from Minnesota (1870-1871); the representative for Minnesota's 1st congressional district (1865-1869); the representative for Minnesota's 1st congressional district (1863-1865); the representative for Minnesota (1861-1863); and the representative for Minnesota (1859-1861).
