On the Nomination PN87: Lt. Gen. Herbert R. McMaster, Jr., in the Army, to be Lieutenant General

Mar 15, 2017 at 2:22 p.m. ET.

This vote confirmed Lt. Gen. H.R. McMaster to be President Trump's National Security Advisor. Although appointments to the position do not normally require Senate confirmation, the appointment of a Senate-confirmed active military officer to this position --- a different position than the one the Senate had previously confirmed them for --- requires that the Senate re-confirm the appointment and the military rank that comes along with the appointment. In this vote, the Senate confirms the re-appointment of McMaster to the new position, which happens to come with the same rank that McMaster already holds. Source: CBS News
