On the Nomination PN367: Russell Vought, of Virginia, to be Deputy Director of the Office of Management and Budget

This was a vote on the nomination of Russell Vought as deputy director of the Office of Management and Budget, in which Vice President Mike Pence cast his ninth tie-breaking vote to confirm the nomination. Vought’s nomination was made controversial by statements he made in a 2016 blog post for Wheaton College. Vought wrote that “Muslims do not simply have a deficient theology. They do not know God because they have rejected Jesus Christ his Son, and they stand condemned.” The American Civil Liberties Union expressed concern over Vought’s words, and Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) questioned Vought on whether he believed all non-Christians were condemned in what some criticized as a religious test, which the Constitution prohibits.
